Safety first. If you are not used to a right-hand-drive car or driving on the left, charter a car with a driver or use Grab. Do not turn day one of the holiday into a driving exam.
Self-drive hire is available on Langkawi and the island roads are manageable, but what is legal, and what insurance covers, follows the hire contract and Malaysian traffic law at the time. This page is not legal advice, and we cannot promise that a given international permit will be accepted by every desk. Ask the hirer in writing: licence type, age, deposit, insurance, and whether the car may leave the island (most trips never need to).

Legality: read it before you sign
Hire from a proper operator. Check the car, whether cover includes third party and collision, and who pays for tyres/undercarriage.
Names on licence, passport and contract must match. Whether an International Driving Permit is required is set by the hirer and the law that day — not by a friend’s “everyone drives”.
Do not drive without a valid licence, on an expired document, or lend the car to someone not on the contract.
After a crash, people first, then police/hirer as required. Informal “settlements” can void insurance.
Habits on the road
Malaysia drives on the left; the steering wheel is on the right. Junctions, roundabouts and leaving a car park are where muscle memory pulls you to the wrong side.
Many motorcycles. Wet roads are slick. Village stretches may have pedestrians, monkeys or a tour van that brakes without warning.
Give way to traffic already on a roundabout; do not overtake into oncoming flow.
Read no-parking signs and private drives; at beach lots watch the tide and soft sand.
Do not drive after drinking or after a long day on the water. Short hops still count.
Steadier options
If this is your first time in a right-hand-drive car, or nobody wants to be the dedicated driver: a charter fits a full day of stops; Grab fits town, meals and point-to-point. Outdoor meeting points can have weak signal — send the pin and the driver’s number to your ground contact in advance.
